Our Mission
To provide palliative care for people with advanced illnesses in a home-like setting. Zazen has the triple aim of providing respite for its patients, their loved ones, and our staff.
Social Solidarity
Social solidarity is the principle of cross-subsidising those who can afford to pay with those who can’t. Zazen will accept medical scheme patients and cash paying patients. With these funds, Zazen will also offer beds and high quality care to people who can’t afford to pay, ensuring that Zazen’s services are accessible to all who need it, irrespective of income.Your donation will help us expand our reach for those who can’t afford to pay.

Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life for patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness.
Our Lodge
We’ve partnered with Sunninghill Guest Lodge to provide a serene setting and holistic care for our guests at Zazen.
Our team at Zazen Respite Care is committed to providing accessible palliative care to all residing in Gauteng province in South Africa. We work to ensure people have choices when faced with making end of life decisions to support their care and reduce the emotional and physical burden on families and loved ones. We collaborate with patients, families, doctors, nurses, social workers, allied health professionals, hospitals and hospices to ensure those living in Gauteng have access to inpatient palliative care services when they need it.
"We can’t express our gratitude enough for the wonderful team at Zazen. In hospital our mother was just another patient, on high levels of medication with no person-centered care - we started to lose who our mother was as a person. The move to Zazen, was everything you would hope end of life care would be. We saw mom come back to her old self, and the team at Zazen quickly became a part of the family, looking after our mother as if her own.
We will always have fond memories of mom laughing with the carers that took such amazing care of her. As we were from overseas, we were able to stay in the Sunninghill Guest Lodge and spend every day with mom, and the time our daughter got to spend with her granny is something we will always be grateful for.
